Room for Two … Families

The latest housing trend might seem like its straight from the silver screen – but having multiple generations living under one roof continues to grow in popularity amongst Valley home buyers.

According to the 2019 Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends report by the National Association of REALTORS®, multigenerational housing continues to be a growing trend. One in six Americans currently live in a multigenerational household.

This trend is driven largely by Gen Xers, who are the second-largest group of homebuyers today at 24 percent. When it comes to Millennial buyers, nine percent purchased a multigenerational property that they could share with aging parents, per the report.

Whether you’re looking to accommodate extended family, aging parents/grandparents or making room for your boomerang child, there are plenty of home options for you and your new housemates in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. But first, let’s explore some of the benefits these trending groups are finding with multigenerational housing:

Shared Expenses and Responsibilities:

Maintaining two households is more costly and time consuming than one. Combining households can offer big savings on common expenses and responsibilities.

Strengthening the Family Bond:

It’s proven that grandparents have a profound effect on their grandchildren’s lives. Whether it’s giving advice or helping with homework, grandparents can provide that additional support in a loving atmosphere.

Peace of Mind:

Having family close can provide an additional level of safety and security. No need to fret if that third call goes unanswered, parents and kids alike can keep an eye on their family’s safety.

Privacy for All:

One of the best things about multigenerational housing – there is still privacy! With separate entrances, bathrooms, bedrooms, and even common areas or private casitas, there is no need to feel like someone is always in your personal space. There is a space for everyone to retreat and enjoy some much needed “alone time.”

Look for a home that was built to accommodate a multigenerational lifestyle. There are so many options available within the Phoenix and Scottsdale area. Toll Brothers in Aviano, Sky Crossing in Desert Ridge and Del Webb in the Grayhawk community are just a few of the builders/neighborhoods offering large family-friendly layouts and floor plans.
